Cape May County – 1872

This remarkable Topographical Map of Cape May County is from the Beers’ Atlas of 1872. Measuring approximately 14″ wide and 16″ high, the map prominently identifies (in the scale of two miles to an inch):

  • Sea Island or Seven Mile Beach (Avalon, Stone Harbor), Ludlams’ Beach (Sea Isle City), Peck’s Beach (Ocean City), as well as Five Mile Beach, 2 Mile Beach, Cape May and Cape May Point
  • Also shown is the Hereford Inlet, Townsend’s Inlet, Corsons Inlet, the former Turtle Cut Inlet, Cold Spring Inlet and the Cape May Light House
  • Prominent bay areas include Ludlam’s Bay, Leaming Sound, Nummy Island and Grassy Sound
  • Inland areas include Rio Grande, Cape May Court House and Seaville, Lower Township, Middle and Upper Townships; the Cape May Railroad, creeks and early roads are well-identified
